Mello has it: the best thing to do is go to your router's webpage, as it will have the IP it is currently using prominently displayed somewhere. For instance, in this flat I go to http://o2wirelessbox/ which redirects to the config pages for the router. You can get there via an IP - it begins with 192, but I can't remember what it is for most routers :p
In Map won't load by Down Rodeo:
No idea - if something's wrong with a cracked version, there's really not a whole lot that can be done, AFAIK. Can you not just use your version in work by signing onto Steam there?
In .NAV , .RES ??? by Down Rodeo:
Eh, probably a file left over from compressing the map. Probably. "The ZTMP file type is primarily associated with 'Steam' by Valve Corporation. When a Steam client downloads a resource from a Steam game server (like a .BSP map), the resource is first compressed to save bandwidth. An associated .ZTMP file is stored on the server so the resource won't need to be compressed again the next time a client requests it. If you change the resource you need to delete the associated .ZTMP file so that the next person who downloads is doesn't get the old copy instead of the changed resource file (Steam does not detect changed game resource files and recreate the .ZTMP file automatically.)" Says a file extension website.
In .NAV , .RES ??? by Down Rodeo:
.nav is for the AI, it tells them how to move around the map. The .res is a resource file and points to certain things used by the map, I think... someone will likely correct me. The .nav file is automatically generated by the way.

As I proved when watching Sherlock Holmes last night by predicting dialogue, not just plot points or events, I am a genius. You may bask.
In Portal File Missing Error by Down Rodeo:
Rockbomb: that error means that for some reason, one of the compiling tools exited early. hlvis needs certain files to operate on; one of those (mapname.prt) is created by an earlier tool. So that file missing could even be caused by simply not running one of the compile programs beforehand. Or there could be some other horrendous problem that we've never seen before causing hlbsp to fail. Who knows.
In Portal File Missing Error by Down Rodeo:
Well, you're doing something wrong. And we won't know what's wrong until you post the log. It's like... say your car won't start. You tell the mechanic over the phone, and he says right can you bring the car in, and you say no, so he can only give you general advice like put petrol in, make sure the battery's not flat... but really, that's probably not the problem. But he can't fix it because you've not shown him the car. That's a messy analogy, but I think it brings across the key points.

In i got games :D by Down Rodeo:
What Aaronjer's saying is that because you are playing on a console your game is significantly crippled. I have no sources on this; I played Fallout 3 very briefly on my computer and have seen my flatmates play it lots on the Xbox. To me it looks pretty much the same but honestly I wouldn't know :) One disadvantage that is definite and for sure is the is lack of RAM. What is it on the PS3? 256 graphics and 256 RAM? Or is it twice that for each? It's ridiculous, given how cheap memory is nowadays. Also, mods. Seriously missing out there.
In Sorry, but its Epic! by Down Rodeo:
Reading threads like that makes me depressed. Honestly. There are 6 billion people in the world; if we all lived like the average American then we'd need three planet Earths. Therefore the world population should be 2 billion, assuming we all live like Americans; if we all lived in tiny cubes and never travelled more than ten miles I'm certain we could get 10 billion. What I'm trying to say is that some people live unnecessary lives and I wish they'd try to improve them :)

(time passes) Jade Empire: it's more a revenge-type story, which ends with you freeing the Empire from an evil emperor's grip. Or not, depending on player choice. The bad thing has already happened. I appreciate these are not great examples... I'll keep trying. Alpha Protocol's probably my best offer.

It's the whole expectation around the games now, the aesthetic, the way it plays, the character design, even the story - you say they're different but it really boils down to "world in danger from massive threat" and eventually you grow stronger and beat it. If you like, I can try to help with your errors, because I've spent quite a while around Source. And it's quite stable :) Connection issues will either be: your firewall, not allowing the game in/out. This probably isn't your problem on Windows 7. It could be because the person's internet you're playing on is quite slow, in which case, there's not a huge amount you can do. It could be that their firewall is blocking Alien Swurm (yes Swurm) so you can ask them to fix that... Dunno what else. Some of my friends and I might rent a server, it's so much better when you don't have a half-second lag going down :p Tell you what, if you can find my Steam name on this site, and can put up with HORRIFIC connections because you're a few thousand miles away, we'll play with you. Which is really what you should be doing. Of course the problem is you're using a controller, so headshots are a little rarer, I think ;) buq: I didn't actually play, I watched my flatmate play through it. I can't remember how many he managed; there was one bastard of a room though where he took multiple attempts and eventually beasted it in slo-mo I think. It was quite harsh for the man nearest the door - every time he reloaded, BANG! Headshot with the HV Penetrator. But I can't remember how many he took out. In Dream Time by Down Rodeo:
You know what I meant. Like... ugh. You know. The only reason I posted this is because I wanted to share the crushing disappointment of waking up and that not being my reality :-(
In Dream Time by Down Rodeo:
So, a dream: this one was pretty awesome. It starts quite oddly, I might have been in some kind of school. The bit I definitely remember is that 5 of the rather more overweight girls in the class, if that's what it was, had decided to put on some kind of show that involved lots of dancing and suchlike. There were a few of us watching this (the show now of course being rather irrelevant to the dream) including a very nice looking girl who shifted position slightly; this must have been a couple of minutes in. I made some joke like, "You better watch you don't lie on top of me," smooth operator that I am. Showing that I completely do not know how women or indeed people work she did proceed to lie somewhat on my chest. I feel I should mention that when she moved originally she bumped me slightly which was the prompt for the comment. What can I say, we watched Top Gun last night. And it was awesome. So anyway this bit gets somewhat fuzzy because I've been awake for a little while now and am forgetting things but the gist is we hit it off. The next section is actually rather inspired aesthetically by Assassin's Creed, I've been playing quite a lot of it recently. We appear to be climbing across rooftops and the like, it's quiet, moonlit, beautiful, all that nonsense. I am showing off somehow - I know this much because my new ladyfriend is very impressed. In fact, we kiss, the conversation turns to... other things, and I hear someone stomping down the stairs of the close presumably on their way to work. I know I was right in the middle of that bloody dream when I woke too! Bastards. Of course this dream is about wish fulfilment, pure and simple, but I was enjoying it! It was a very nice dream to be part of. Also, to try to save time to remember as much is possible, I am typing this on my sexy new phone from bed :D Yes, I called the phone sexy but not the girl. What of it?

So, hard restart again, still nothing, loads Ubuntu by default. I've forgotten all my Linux know-how so I restart this time with a flatmate's keyboard plugged in. Windows doesn't get anything from it either but tells me that the driver thinks it is working fine - clearly not the case. This morning I was going to an interview; I had one last check - nothing. Just coming in a few minutes ago I tried turning it on without turning on the power supply, i.e. run the thing on battery. And it works. I don't know why. I don't know why it stopped working. Conclusion: I find that sometimes I hate computers.

My advice then is to read the documentation on the thread type you're using. It seems to me that the method does most of the work for you (not trying to suggest you're in some way lacking), so when you start it up it does its thing then goes, and you're not being given much choice over how to do it. Remember, lines with a hash in front of them are preprocessor directives. See my post about what #include does, for instance. It literally deposits all the text from the file "whatever.h" at the top of yours (which is how you are able to use the various builtin functions). So no, you don't need the hash sign. There are other tutorials that break functions in a bit more gently... perhaps it is still best to think of functions as being similar to variables - declare before use!
In Rock's cpp truck. by Down Rodeo:
You don't need the brackets around the 0, you can do it like return 0; Also you have to declare the function before you use it, just like variables. So at the top of your file you can have one line like "int test()" then later on you can define it. This is what header files are mainly used for.
In Rock's cpp truck. by Down Rodeo:
Yes. As I'm sure you know the first bit is the return type, the second bit the name and the bit in the brackets is where you place the arguments. Or parameters if you will.

Put it before you ever intend to use them. It's like... the preprocessor basically substitutes whatever happens after Screw it, example time: #define 1 2 Means that wherever the preprocessor sees '1' in the source it replaces it with '2'. So, #defines should go at the top of the source. The #ifdef and #ifndef are like small if-else constructs but again are only followed by the preprocessor. It's like asking "what platform am I on?" One final thing to note is that #include is just the same - it is only used by the preprocessor. All it does is dump the entire contents of the header file you specify at the top of your file (at least it does in C, but what does #include <cstdlib> mean in that sense? Is it still a header? Jer, help me!)

Have you unlocked most of the other bits aye? Well yes or you wouldn't be on the factory :D It took me ages to get the warlord. Not a fan of his glyph - if it stacked I'd use it lots more. I've never had the Glowing Guardian with my assassin runs, did have him with a priest though. That was just messy... I also had a really good run with a monk in the library. I chose Taurog as my god, mashed everything. I did well over 100 damage at the end...

Occasionally because it's a random layout you will be screwed, OTOH the games are short and you lose nothing really by restarting. You should try a Human Priest as your first playthrough, Priests are really powerful against undead. I'm sure you've worked out the mechanics, but you gain health and mana by exploring, monsters of a higher level hit you first, same levels means combat happens at the same time and being a higher level means you go first. You get experience equal to the level of the monster PLUS a bonus when you kill a monster that is a higher level than you (for instance, killing a level 9 when you are level 1 boosts you to level 6 instantly). I'm not sure what my win rate is like - probably not very high as I went on a losing streak with the warlord when I was trying to unlock something - but I can still win a moderate amount of time.

Only problem with switch/case is it often doesn't allow for complex statements or logical expressions, necessitating nested ifs. I can kind of see why most languages do that - for starters, it's easier; secondly the ifs give you so much more control.
In First unread post thoughts by Down Rodeo:
I was thinking about the "first unread post" thing discussed earlier in another truck. You could reduce the load on your poor server by only implementing it for certain users - e.g. having a certain post threshold after being active for a certain amount of time, say 150 posts after a month. This would allow you to move users that only post a couple of times in the hammer truck into an "inactive" state and then possibly move them on from there, i.e. deletion, if you feel it's necessary. Also it means that people who are now "regular" users have the functionality and would now be around often enough that the lists of "last seen" wouldn't be too large. Pathologic cases: Cornjer and jigsaw. Various admins. Solution: whenever the list of posts gets "too big", say, 15 trucks per user, either stop adding new ones or fall back to the previous where the truck just goes red. Or if someone doesn't log in for too long wipe the list. Tsimple!
In hateris by Down Rodeo:
Fair enough. The last time I played it it gave me all the different pieces. There is a way to do that; it just involves screwing your game completely. As in, if you have a "trench" that is 4 deep, waiting for a line piece, it will give you one of those line pieces as soon as you close over the top. That sort of thing :)

Exactly - its design choices really impact performance. Both Java and JS are object-oriented languages with verbose syntax though! They are slightly similar (obviously excluding the whole compilation thing). I'm at a position where I'm kind of happy with Java. I've been doing proper Javastuff for well over a year now and I'm at the stage where, although we have our differences, some things still piss me off immensely and sometimes it makes me sad, I can live with it. Not only does it have try {} catch {}, it almost FORCES you to use them, all the damn time. For instance: Java code class Main { public static void main(String args[]) { BufferedReader input = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in)); input.readLine(); input.close(); System.exit(); } } Will not compile. You either have to declare that the method 'main' throws an exception, like: Java code class Main { public static void main(String args[]) throws IOException { BufferedReader input = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in)); input.readLine(); input.close(); System.exit(); } } or wrap it in a try {} catch {}. Bloody annoying so it is; sometimes you just want a quick 'n' dirty input. Admission: sometimes, if a method or code block is small, I will occasionally stick everything on one line, like Java code class ObjectWithStringRepresentation { ... toString() { return thisClassAsAString; } } but I don't do it often.
In Rock's cpp truck. by Down Rodeo:
Yes, it's called "nested ifs". You can do the same with select...case (it's switch...case in Java, think it's select in C++). And sprinkles is right, formatting is very important. Good to see someone else using that style - I'm not a fan of the K&R/Java style: Java code try { do { something() } while (something_else() ) } catch (Exception e) { ohshit!() } Not for me likes.

Uff, I suppose I might be able to get a wired 360 controller soon, maybe. Possibly even within the next couple of weeks!
In Vista and caching by Down Rodeo:
The reason it was grinding is at that stage it was filling my RAM with the cached data, it brought it down to about 50. Yes, I watched it go from ~250. So yes, the harddrive was making noises because Vista was filling it at that stage. I'm not sure that I've noticed a speedup... who knows, maybe I have.
In Vista and caching by Down Rodeo:
So I was looking at task manager today in an effort to find out why my HD was grinding like a horny teen. Turns out this is why:
As you can see there's about 50 MB of RAM currently empty and something of the order 3000 MB used as 'cache'. So there we have it! Vista caches your files transparently; it appears as free memory in task manager, my guess is when you memalloc() or whatever the OS checks that the cached stuff isn't about to be in use then pisses all over it :D For the record I don't agree with that style of caching, I'd like to know which 3 GB of data it thinks I might use, for the moment all it does for me is slow my current usage down because of the constant i/o. That and shorten the life of the drive :( EDIT: to the attention of Superererererer and cloudy :)

In JavaScript Engines by Down Rodeo:
I see - so we have some funky different approaches... Personally, I think ECMA script is horrible anyway.
In JavaScript Engines by Down Rodeo:
SJ - I think it's the code they choose to compile that determines how fast it can go. If V8 compiles everything for large JS files that'll take a while; comparatively doing very little means the whole code runs slowly. Of course this is the idea behind what I was saying earlier, with the compilation of loops. I suppose it's like putting assembly in critical loops in other code.
In JavaScript Engines by Down Rodeo:
It's interesting actually, I was reading a post by the Firefox developers about their JS engine... essentially Spidermonkey, or whatever this one's called, is shit hot at loops but has problems with branching because it doesn't run branched code through the JIT. Loops do however. I don't like Opera, I feel they bring very little as compared to the other browsers - they're essentially a closed-source alternative to IE which don't sit right with me. Same reason I'm not fond of Safari, but it's based on Webkit, maybe? So yes, the Firefox engine, it's going to be improved soon to deal better with branching code.

In ram, why is it so high by Down Rodeo:
My old laptop had horrifying lag when playing Half-Life when some kind of effect fired, I changed it and then it played better. Then I tried CS:S on lowest settings and got something like 18 fps max, 2-3 worst. Similarly for HL2 :D This one, however, can play Crysis. Not brilliantly but it manages at native resolution... The thing I meant to say was that Vista and 7 are memory-heavy anyway, so a lot of that would be the OS. And AFAIK Vista and 7 both do caching, but at startup, then don't tell you that it's in use. Kinda transparent-like.

What can I say? Physics is my subject. Which, thinking about it, makes it incredibly odd for me to be writing a program that takes arbitrary DNA sequences and visualises them in an illuminating way. Why am I doing this? Sometimes, I get very confused. Also, as an addendum, it's because most LCD monitors are view-dependent, i.e. if you look at them from funny angles the colours tend to go strange, unlike CRT. I can't remember why they do this. And cannot really find out why, but I imagine it will be something like a reason. I have to go get tea now then PUB QUIZ over at the RMS. Oh my God I'm blogging. That wouldn't work, I don't think. Yes - be careful though, if you give admin permission to a program there is a certain time in which you are authenticated as root afterwards. It's not that long, but be careful. It doesn't authenticate you as root if it detects a period of inactivity, e.g. the screensaver coming on. You should try something like Arch Linux, or Gentoo! They'd be fun. I was considering them but there was a serious likelihood of me fucking up horribly.
In RWJ by Down Rodeo:
To be fair, I noticed this, and I think it's to do with the angle you see the colour at. For instance if my post is at the bottom of the screen it appears to be more saturated than it does at the top. It's something like that anyway. Because I can still hide text like this!

This can be problematic because it means it operates like a fucking macbook, except worse, because it's more sensitive. So, as you're typing it will start to think that you've clicked elsewhere on the screen by tapping the pad (even when you have not) and the text will start up anew wherever your cursor was. This is frustrating, to say the least. You'll have to re-install the touchpad back to the factory settings (if compatible) before you can reconfigure it to behave normally. You know, where you click to click.
See, I did this by myself. I was ripping out as much crap as I could from Vista and it now does this, mainly when I hit the pad accidentally with the base of my left thumb. It's very annoying. When I say ripping out crap, I mean uninstalling everything, including drivers I saw as being... superfluous. As far as screens of death are concerned, this laptop (bought in August) has never done anything bad to me. I call this surprising. OTOH my other, older laptop, when booted into Vista, will crash after roughly twenty minutes. It also bluescreened in the first four hours of my using it. An md5 sum folds all the data in a file into a hex string. My list explains everything!
In Anti Virus by Down Rodeo:
LIST GET GO NAO 1. Create new file for user - say there's been an update, or whatever. 2. Run this file through an MD5 hash, record the filesize and a magic number or something easily identifiable about the file. 3. Open a secure channel with the user, send file to them. 4. When user receives file, take MD5 hash of this file, compare to serverside hash, they should be the same. Also compare filesize, whatever other data you took. This method should ensure that there have been no file download errors and that the file wasn't interfered with, to a fairly high certainty. I think. Also drop the Mandarin characters, or whatever they are, we don't need to see them. All it means is the program is trying to interpret the data in the encrypted file as Unicode and surprise surprise, all the hex strings are in the high ranges :)

It is fast. My plan had been to take an additional #DEFINE for the number of sun samples and one for the sun size (which I was probably going to have to ask you about, i.e. what's a good value) then approximate like crazy. I was going to assume that the sun could be approximated by a plane normal to the direction between the actual sun position and the hit point on the heightmap surface. I'd then split this plane into the number of sun-sample sections squared (i.e. along the x and y planes), jitter them to introduce a bit of smoothness into the shadow, then trace each one individually to change the shading. Of course because I don't know exactly how you do the shading I gave up, but had I known that it should have been easy enough to do, I think. It would fit nicely in the shadow-test loop as far as I can see. And yes, it is crazy-fast.
In Anti Virus by Down Rodeo:
The method I'm talking about is not encryption, it is pretty much just checking to see if the file's OK.
In Anti Virus by Down Rodeo:
Probably not. And when I say high-security, I mean, banking programs, large programs, that sort of thing. Making a one-time md5 hash of a file to check you've downloaded the right one is not exactly what I meant. The algorithm is good enough that a small change to the file produces a different md5. In fact, probably any change is enough. If an attacker knew the md5 to create he could create a file with those characteristics but it would likely have many other noticeable differences to the original.
In Anti Virus by Down Rodeo:
sprinkles said: Sure paranoia never leads to schizophrenia.
That's what they want you to think. sprinkles said: And, you could have jus' said encryption algorithm.
Also... US-CERT of the U. S. Department of Homeland Security said MD5 "should be considered cryptographically broken and unsuitable for further use,"[7] Why say the simple thing? I said md5 because it's well-known and while it is not useful for high-security applications it's probably sufficiently nontrivial to be of use to check that a downloaded file is the right one. Combine that with filesize, magic numbers... it's probably ok.

Well anyway, obviously I felt I had to go rescue him, and as I was leaving, this Richard Dawkins fellow turns up. I say RD but he was very very healthy looking, like quite tanned as well. I'm not describing this well. Anyway, I immediately didn't trust him, for whatever reason. I set off to find Casanova but my suspicions were confirmed as I saw this character attempting to ... eat one of the people at the table. Think something slightly like the T-1000, except I can only describe him as being 'hollow'. He was bending over the person at the table, with his mouth enlarging to become very big and circular. My response to this was to run inside and beat him with a golf club, telling him that I'd warned him. I'm sorry, I've realised this isn't very good and is fairly incomplete, I can't even remember what happens next. Perhaps I wake up. | |
