Let's talk about the upcoming Doom game. So I'm pretty excited about it, but a couple of things look pretty disappointing. Like enemies dropping medkits and the fact that you can execute them. It makes Doom look like another casual FPS.

Some people talk about the "graphix being outdated" but I don't really care as long as it has decent level/character design.

As for the gameplay, judging by the video it looks like it has that heaviness that older Doom games had with movement which is cool. But then again it could be because he was playing it with a fucking controller.

It's a dust themed map so I dunno which barrels would fit link.

I did but it didn't work. That being said when I walk there there's only one spot that the player model gets dark but I noticed it after I released the map. I also tried changing the transparent texture to an opaque one and it worked, but I wanted to keep the net.

Sooo, I decided to replace the model with crates.

I made a clip brush around it and set its zhlt flags to opaque (the one that blocks light) so it can cast a shadow. I noticed that when I use vluzacn's zhlt, the model will look dark if the brush above has an opaque texture instead of a transparent (talking about the net).

The thing is, I wanna have the transparent brush cast its shadows and shit AND make the model look dark. I tried messing with the render modes but nuttin changed :(

SO I'm using Vluzacn's ZHLT tools coz it makes lighting look better and also adds some shadows with transparent textures. The thing is, I want a model to look dark but I don't know how to do it. With the default compiler I could do it but with the new one it looks bright.

I'm using the ambient_generic entity. There's no such thing as "not looped" option.

I edited the sound file in a way to make it sound the same every time it ends and starts again. What do you mean by built in?

So I'm trying to add some music but it only plays once.

If I add a button I have to press it again so the music starts playing again but I want to press it once and make it loop.

I un-checked "not toggled" but it doesn't do anything.

So I want to make an edited version of cs_office for a server but when I load it in Hammer it looks like there are missing textures,even though I have loaded the cs_office.wad and halflife.wad.

I tried compiling it to see if it was some sort of optimization trick but it won't compile.

When I'm about to compile my map I get "The system cannot find the file specified",it usually happens when the names are wrong but that ain't the case.

In the log I get this

Edit: The first time this error appeared was because I used the clipping tool on a clip brush.

Yeah,by the way it happened because I didn't turn that water texture to func_water,I just did it to do an early compile to see how the map would look like.I made it a func_water later and then added floor below it to avoid leaks.

Try compiling it and check the amount of base patches you get.

Note:If it looks shitty,save it as a new .rmf in case you wanna be able to have its previous state.

Ah just as I thought,your map is way too big.Try scaling it down to half maybe.And i just noticed that it exceeds the number of max base patches,which if i remember correctly is about 60k.Your map has 99732 base patches.

I tried adding light entities both below and above the floor.I'm also using a ligh_enviroment entity but nothing happens :(

So,i made some floors with solid brushes using one of those textures with the blue background that allow you to see through them.

The problem is,whenever i walk on them the player turns black,like there's no lighting there.The textures aren't dark,i can see them but when i step on those areas everything gets dark (hands and pistol). I tried to add as many lights as possible but that didn't fix it.

I also tried 2 ways of doing it.

First i made those brushes func_wall and solid.And i also tried the other way by making them func_illusionary and then add clip brushes inside them.

What the fuck is going on here?

So after entering some func_illusionary brushes i go to "check for problems" and it finds one error saying "button_target is empty" and it navigates me to another brush .. wtf?I really gotta use func_illusionary,any idea why this happens?

Well you can always download maps from other mappers to get inspired or try to make something from your hood into hammre .. oorrr while sitting somewhere enjoying the breeze and shit try to think something and draw it down on a paper.

As for the height of the walls i don't think it's something you can learn, but you can add an info_player_start and go to the cts head with the camera to see where it is and adjust the wall where you want it

Also you don't ask others what they build first in a map,it doesn't matter.

I haven't used sourceSDK much so i'm not sure,but from what i know (about creating custom sky textures for 1.6) you gotta make like 5 .tga files with the same width/height and put some words next to the name,i think it was "bk,ft" and some others i can't remember atm :/ (google is yer friend :3)

Go to "Browse Textures" (or whatever it's called) and type 'sky' to find the sky texture.

Then make a roof on your map by using it (make sure there are no gaps between the walls and your skybox) and choose your sky texture by going to Map Properties.

How do i make a switch to turn lights on and off?

First make the lights (or a single light it doesn't matter) where you want them to be.Select the lights you made (or the one light,if you made one) by holding control and then press Alt+Enter.On the "Name" field put a name you can easily remember (let's say 'Light').

Then make a button with the block tool somewhere (make sure you can reach it ),select it and press Control + T to open the "Object Properties" window.Select "func_button" from the list.Then put the name of the lights in the "Target" field,and you're done.(On the flags tab of func_button i usually check the "Don't move" box because it's better that way)

Note:If you do it this way the lights will be ON when you start.If you want them to be OFF select the lights you made,then alt+enter and go to the "Flags" tab.Check the "Initially Dark" box and they will be turned off when you start.

So i re-installed windows and installed teh hammre again,did everything right in options and when i click on "new" to start making a map hammer closes.

Soo i don't know what drivers should i install,or how to install in ubuntu,i actually started using it 2 days ago,but i can give some information that might help.

When i open PlayOnLinux this appears "You don't seem to have 3d acceleration.We advise you install and enable it.".

I open the Hardware Drivers from the Administration section and it says "This driver is activated and currently in use".

Then i go to System/Preferences/Ati Catalyst Control center and this pops up

Also when i open Counter Strike:Source it says that my graphics card driver must be updated to run the game.

Can anyone help?

With those settings your map should not take more than 15-20 minutes unless 1) you're doing your final compile 2) you suck at mapping.

What process does it seem to take long on?

If its csg then you have a lot of brushes or you have complex brushes.

If its bsp then your computer is slow.

If its vis then you have a huge map.

If its rad then your lighting is to complex or to much.

Sometimes when compiling a map the cpu usage goes 100% and the compiling stops on a thing called LeafThread.

When i am talking about the sky i don't mean "How do i make sky in a map" because i already know that.

I mean that i once didn't have a map from a server and after the map-download(Mapname.bsp) ,four .tga files started downloading.It was the sky of the map so it automatically went in the Env folder with the other .tga files (Sky files or however you wanna call it).

By the way there's not such thing "Func_push".I tried func_pushable but nothing happened.I once thought "Maybe it's trigger gravity" but this didn't work as well as i remember

Well 1st i made a big block so when the players fall there will come up,then i right clicked on it and i clicked tie to entity and made it Trigger_teleport .Then i took the entity tool and i made an info_teleport_destination.I gave it a name.Then i gave the same name to the big block i 1st made.

This is the way i do it:

1.Choose the water texture you want

2.Then make the water where you want it

3.Then make it Funt_water

4.In the properties window of func_water go to "Damage inflicted when blocked" and set the damage you want

That's it

I once installed Vista then i tried to install a game and guess what.It would stop at like 50% or even 20.Then i pressed Control+Alt+Delete.Checked out the amount of free memory (ram).It was 0,also when the amount of free ram drops it never goes back to its normal amount even if i close everything.And no my pc is not like 10 years old it's vista that sucks dick

Hey i just wanna ask something that pissed me off today while making a map.I made breakable walls but i thought it would take less time by selecting the walls i want with Control + Click.Then i went at properties and i did the thing bla bla bla,so after that i wanted to change something and here's the prob.The walls got automatically "grouped".I mean i click on one and it automatically selects all the walls i made breakable.I press Ungroup and still nothing,it just stays like this .Maybe a little help? (By the way i know that i can delete all of the walls and make new but i want another solution for this.A "Faster" ;))

Hey i m trying to make a map with teh hammre and i m about to make the spawn points now.The problem is that when i click on the entity tool the Objects menu is empty,plus when i press Alt+P it says "there is no player start".I think i ve already done one by choosing the Entity tool then clicking somewhere and then pressing enter.What's the problem?Please help
