I tried compiling spraymoreplease's map, and it's being a pain.

A normal to a plane is a vector formed from taking the 'vector' or 'cross' product of two vectors on its surface. I don't know how you'd end up with a plane that "doesn't have one".

The coplanar plane bit sounds like there might be two (or more) brushes occupying exactly the same area in the hammer world. Does hammer get sniffy about that sort of thing?

Oh yeah, what does ZHLTProblems.html say about it? I don't have the compile tools on this.

OK, for the planes with no normals it says that the vertices have been mucked around with- basically, one of the corners has been 'merged' with another resulting in a line. You can't take normals from single lines in 3D. It says the only solution is to delete the brush involved :(

Again for the coplanar planes it seems that vertex maniplation is the issue. It seemingly involves moving a vertex kinda funnily such that it moves two planes to be in exactly the same bit. The file suggests trying to remove the offending vertex, or something else. Fortunately I have here a link. I pretty much should have put this at the top shouldn't I? :D

OK! I've deleted the problematic brushes.

So I compiled and everything went well. But when I try to run the map CS tells me it can't load "counte.wad" (not counter). Now, I have no idea what this wad is, so is there a way to find the brush that has a texture from that file on it? (So I can change it..?)

IF NOT: Where the f@#k can I find this. I Google whacked it and found one French site that has it... but I can't download from there (I doubt it's the same .wad, anyway).

HELP?!

I don't suppose -nowadtextures would help no? No, it wouldn't sorry for the retardedness. I don't know how you'd find the offending textures; is there some way of compiling maps without using any textures?

Remove counte.wad from your wad list in Hammer.

If it's not there, do you have any wads that are similar to that name? It looks like the name is cut off (?).

I cannot find it, never heard of it, don't where in the map it is being used, and no other file has similar name...

EDIT: I read the compile log. It says that having more than 8 wad's MAY be a source for unexplained problems. Could this be it?

That could be the problem. It's annoying but you're only supposed to have 8 wads loaded at a time. (Goddamn old-timey 1997 game engines.)

Arrrg! I can tell you for sure that this map is not using more than 8 wads, if only I knew which 8!
Is there a way to see? In map errors (I removed ALL the wads from the list) it gives me only the texture name missing, not the wad file missing.

i have a question about that.
if you have like 5 wads in your map and you use them all, and then combine all the wads and replace the 5 with the 1, will you have to re-texture everything in your map, or will hammer recognize the endings?

OK, NOW I'M REALLY PISSED!!
I merged all my wads, compiled, and started a new local server. It loaded the map and everything, but got stuck at "Verifying Resources". What does that even mean?? Verifying what? You just loaded everything needed! WHAT IS THERE TO VERIFY????

The solution lies in destroying your uncooperative computer. I have many memories of a 6-year-old Dell chugging away... fruitlessly.
I suppose if you were only wanting a look at the map geometry etc rather than the specific textures applied you could replace all the textures with like the defaults...

Hammer doesn't care what your WADs are called or how many there are. If you rename your WADs your textures will still work. Only the texture name matters.

EdAn: Did you use -nowadtextures? And I hope you re-exported your .MAP and re-compiled.

It's a map of a curch by spraymoreplease. I just fixed leaks, planes with no normal, and added some basic stuff. It's a very nice map, but not a good one- asymmetrical and small. so...yep.
