I don't know anything about servers, so why have an expensive server when you can get a cheaper pc with better specs that might perform just as well?

Generally you pay more for server components because they are more resilient with higher quality parts and redundancy. And they're good at doing lots of things for lots of users at once.
If your home PC breaks down it's not too big a deal.
If your server breaks down it's a nightmare.
Also you need everything in server form factor to get it installed in a rack. Space is expensive.

With my windows xp, I never once get BSOD, but with this windows 7, I must have gotten bsod atleast half a dozen times
